The iPad mini is really light--half as heavy as the full-size iPad, making it light enough that you don't notice you're holding it--and pretty much exactly the size of, well, a book, making it an ideal e-reader that also packs a lot more functionality: the mini can pretty much do anything the full-size iPad can do.</div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
It's only got two big strikes against it: the quality of its screen, which is poorer than not only the full-size iPad (and the iPhones 4, 4S and 5), but also the mini's closest competitors, the Kindle Fire HD and the <a href="http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/digital/devices/article/53063-google-nexus-7-kills-the-kindle-fire-complements-the-ipad.html" style="color: #551a8b; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Google Nexus 7</a>. Also, at $329 for the base model (with 16GB of storage and Wi-Fi only), the mini is a good chunk of change more than the $200 Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7, and not that much less than the $499 full-size iPad.</div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
<span class="document-body-sub-section-heading" style="font-weight: bold;">The full-size iPad is an amazing device, but it's big: awkward to hold in one hand, too big for a small bag, and, frankly, too expensive to feel completely safe carrying around. Reading a book in bed with the 10" iPad is a bit annoying; after a while, it feels like you're snuggling up with a laptop. The iPad mini solves these problems. At less than the size (and maybe the weight) of a trade paperback, the mini is perfect for reading on: you pretty much forget you're holding not a book but a computer. And, unlike the Kindle or Nook, you get access to the whole Apple app ecosystem, meaning, for readers, not just iBooks, but Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and other e-reader apps too. Plus you can download great apps like Goodreader for viewing and annotating PDFs and other document formats.A True Electronic Book</span></div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
The Main problems with the mini as an e-reader--and it's only such a big issue given the advances Apple and its competitors have made in other devices--is the screen, but I'll say more on that below.</div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
<span class="document-body-sub-section-heading" style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
<span class="document-body-sub-section-heading" style="font-weight: bold;">A Full-Power iPad</span></div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
The Kindle Fire HD and Nook are a different class of device, great for reading and watching video and surfing the Web, but pretty much unfit for making anything that involves typing, moving files, or transporting data from the device to anywhere else. The Nexus, however, is pretty good for those tasks, like the iPad, and if you're an Android fan, that's the device you'll want.</div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
The iPad mini does everything the full size iPad can do, meaning game playing, word processing (I'm writing this on a full-size iPad), music-making, file-moving, photo-editing, and pretty much anything else an app developer can come up with. You get access to all those hundreds of thousands of apps in the Apple App Store, many, many more than in on any other device. Plus there's other fun stuff like Apple's irresistible Smart Cover. The mini is the cheapest way into the world of Apple's tablets.</div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
<span class="document-body-sub-section-heading" style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
<span class="document-body-sub-section-heading" style="font-weight: bold;">The Screen and the Price</span></div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
The big sticking point is that dang screen. Basically the mini is a scaled down iPad 2, meaning one generation before Apple brought its Retina Display to the iPad: as far as the display goes, the mini represents a step backward, and if you've looked at the retina display on a third- or fourth-generation iPad or on a recent iPhone, you will notice the difference on the iPad mini. When looking at text, you will see the pixels that form the letters, which you can't on a Retina display. The mini's screen simply isn't as bright or vivid as the ones on the full-size iPad, the Kindle Fire HD or the Nexus 7. Given that the iPad is a good deal more expensive than these last two, the grainier display rankles.</div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
And then there is the price: at $329, the mini just doesn't cost that much less than the $499 full-size iPad (and you can still get a new iPad 2 for $399), and it's a good deal more than the other small-size tablets. Apple is counting on its rabid fans to ignore the price tag.</div>
<div class="article" style="padding-right: 10px;">
Finally, the iPad mini is a great device, easy and fun to hold, a powerful e-reader that offers all the cool things, like iCloud, that Apple has come up with over the last few years. The screen ain't so great, and the mini costs too much, but you can bet there will be a whole lot of little iPad boxes under trees this holiday season.</div>

You made a smart decision investing your hard-earned money in your iPad. Wouldn’t it be a waste if you never use it to it’s fullest potential?<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Apple Forgot Your Manual?!</b><br />
What was the first thing you looked for when you opened your iPad box? Were you like me… surprised and disappointed that there was no instruction manual in there? I thought it was a mistake and the Apple factory forgot to pack my slick glossy full-color instruction book.<br />
Apple’s whole model is “ease of use”. The statement they tried to make was that you don’t even need a manual. And, maybe that’s true if you’re just going to use your iPad as an overpriced email checker. But, it’s not just a giant iPhone. You want to get more out of your iPad. You want to unlock it’s full potential.<br />
But unfortunately, if no one actually shows you some of the iPad’s less-obvious tricks and tips, you’ll probably never discover them on your own. And, that is your iPad’s one BIG flaw.<br />
Let A Super-Geek Show You the Way<br />
<br />
Don’t you secretly wish you had some super-geek friend who bought his iPad the day it came out? He could come over your house and show you how to do all the coolest stuff. Well, I’m that geek friend! I’ve recorded video lessons for you that cover every single feature and benefit of your iPad.<br />
How many times have you said to yourself, I haven’t used that feature yet. But, I’m going to learn someday soon. Well, today is that day.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">In Just 11 Minutes a Day!</span><br />
<br />
You can watch your iPad Video Lessons at your own convenience. If you just watch 11 minutes a day during your ritual cup of coffee, you’ll quickly and easily gain an understanding of your iPad.<br />
Plus, I’ll show you untapped features that you would never even think to google-search.<br />
Admit to yourself that you’ve already struggled a bit figuring out some stuff on your iPad. I know I did at first too. I spent month and months reading, experimenting, searching online, and talking to other iPad owners. Sometimes, I had to throw my hands up in frustration. Now, I can save you all that time by quickly and visually showing you how to do EVERYTHING you want to do with your iPad.<br />

<b>From Patrick The Pad Professor...</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
There's no doubt about the brilliance of the iPad. You certainly made a wise decision buying one. Wouldn't it be nice, though, to know that you were getting the most out of your tablet?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It's not in your iPad box, that's for sure. In fact, you don't even have one! As I'm sure you noticed when you first opened up your brand new iPad, Apple doesn't provide paying customers with any sort of manual or instruction booklet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
In Apple's defence, the iPad is so 'easy to use', you couldn't possibly need a manual. Right?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Well, not quite. Sure, you don't need instructions to learn how to open up the Google homepage, that's simple. But, your iPad is capable of so much more than the mere basics. Its ability stretches far beyond a giant version of Angry Birds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The sad truth is, you're unlikely to know how to use your iPad to its full ability without being shown...and that's iPad's biggest drawback.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
You need to learn how to unlock its full potential!</div>

<b>The black iPad mini sells out in the pre-order period, after the white edition, which sold out 20 minutes after the period began.</b><br />
<br />
First the white edition of Apple’s much hyped, much debated iPad mini tablet sold out during the pre-order period, and now it appears the black version of the iPad mini has also sold out, with shipment dates for both models now pushed two weeks back from the initial Nov. 2 shipment dates. Apple’s white products typically generate higher demand, but the sell-out of both editions suggests that despite a higher-than-expected $329 starting price, consumers really want to get their hands on an iPad mini.<br />
<br />
Some critics scoffed at the starting point, which is at least $100 more than the start price for much of the rest of the 7-inch tablet market. Rivals like Google’s Nexus 7 tablet ($199) and Amazon’s Kindle Fire ($159), while perhaps lacking the design finesse and build quality of the iPad mini, have tapped into a market where low prices seem to be as much a factor as a smaller form. However, a recent IHS report said the iPad Mini could help the 7-inch tablet market double in size in 2012 and 2013, if Apple could provide enough iPad mini tablets to meet market demand.<br />
<br />
It is an open question as to whether or not Apple will be able to keep up with demand for the iPad mini. Preceding the launch, unconfirmed reports suggested Apple could experience supply chain issues regarding the display component. As recently as Oct. 24—the day after the iPad Mini was unveiled--an NPD DisplaySearch report by Senior Analyst Richard Shim said that although Apple is expanding its partner base for the iPad Mini, issues with the display panel would limit initial shipments.A higher-than-average price point for the iPad mini could also prevent Apple from reaching the widest audience possible, but with its foot now firmly planted in the 7-inch tablet space, and the full-size iPad still commanding nearly 70 percent of the worldwide tablet market, Apple’s position is undoubtedly robust. A note from Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley estimated that in 2013, Apple would sell 101.6 million tablets, compared with Samsung, expected to sell 8.4 million tablets, and Amazon, forecast to sell 10.7 million tablets.<br />
<br />
"With the impressive refresh of the 4th generation Retina iPad and launch of the iPad mini earlier this week, we anticipate very strong holiday quarter iPad sales. In fact, with Apple’s decisions to price the iPad mini at a $170 discount to similar 4th generation iPad SKUs and competitively priced versus lower priced competing products from Google and other Android OEMs, we anticipate strong sales of the iPad Mini, especially as gifts during the holiday quarter,” Walkley wrote. “Further, we believe the iPad mini significantly expands Apple’s tablet addressable market internationally and should lead to strong sales throughout F2013 as international distribution increases."<br />
<br />
In the battle for tablet market share, Amazon this week took the fight to Apple, posting a comparison ad titled “Much More for Much Less” on its homepage, touting the features on the Kindle Fire HD that can’t be found on the iPad mini, most notably a higher-resolution screen, which it says has 30 percent more pixels than its Apple competitor. The Kindle Fire HD also boasts two speakers to the iPad mini’s single speaker and a $199 starting price, making it $130 less than the cheapest iPad mini.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12424959973706377812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1784215296620337693.post-26548025457102003952012-10-29T11:53:00.000-07:002012-10-29T14:01:48.335-07:00(NEW) Nexus 10 tablet - Nexus 4 smartphone - Nexus 7 mini tablet<br />
Google on Monday morning announced a new Nexus 10 tablet, a Nexus 4 smartphone and new versions of its Nexus 7 mini tablet that will arrive in time for the holiday season.<br />
<br />
The company announced the long-rumored Nexus 4, which is the fourth iteration of its Nexus smartphone. The device is built by LG and features a 4.7-inch screen with a 1,280 by 768 resolution and a 320 pixels per inch density. It features an 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front camera. The phone will run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pHuoDqcIyqk" width="540"></iframe>
The Nexus 4 will be available for purchase on Google Play starting on Nov. 13 and from T-Mobile on Nov. 14. Google will sell an 8 GB version of the phone unlocked for $299 and 16 GB for $349. T-Mobile will sell the Nexus 4 to Value Plan customers for $199.99 and 20 monthly payments of $20. Classic Plan customers can get the phone for $199.99 on a new two-year contract.<br />
<br />
Google also announced the Nexus 10, a high-end tablet that will compete with the Apple's 9.7-inch iPad. The Nexus 10 is built by Samsung and features what Google called the "highest resolution" screen on a tablet. That display is 10.05-inches, has a 2,560 by 1,600 resolution and has a magazine-quality 300 pixels per inch density.<br />
<br />
Additionally, Google said the Nexus 10 will have nine hours of continuous-use battery life and feature a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.9-megapixel front camera. The tablet will also have micro USB and micro HDMI ports.<br />
<br />
The Mountain View company said the Nexus 10 will be available for purchase online from Google Play starting Nov. 13. It will cost $399 for a 16 GB version and 32 GB for a $499 model.<br />
<br />
Not to be outdone by the iPad mini, Google also announced new pricing and a cellular-connected version of its Nexus 7 mini tablet. Google will no longer sell an 8 GB model, but instead, it has dropped the price of the 16 GB model from $249 to $199. It will now also sell a 32 GB unit for $249. These models are available now while a $299 32 GB model capable of connecting to HSPA+ networks such as AT&T's or T-Mobile's will go on sale on Google Play Nov. 13.<br />
<br />
Google was originally expected to announce the new devices Monday at an event scheduled in New York City, but cancelled the event because of Hurricane Sandy.<br />
<br />
The product launches were instead announced in a company blog this morning.<br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">Amazon, not surprisingly, says it's advantage Kindle Fire HD, in a comparison with the iPad Mini.</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px;">(Credit: Amazon/Screenshot by CNET's Jonathan Skillings) </span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px;">Amazon is understandably partial to its Kindle Fire HD. And it surely wants you to feel the same way, especially given the splashy arrival of a new kid tablet in town.</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px;">The e-commerce giant with the tablet business </span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">sideline today spruced up its home page with a big, blatant comparison of the Kindle Fire HD against the iPad Mini, unveiled just days ago by Apple. There's no mistaking the conclusion Amazon wants to leave in your mind, what with the supersize typeface proclaiming "Much More for Much Less." That would be the Kindle Fire HD, of course. </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">In Amazon's estimation, it's pretty much all about the visuals. (Well, and the price tag, too.) The "stunning" display of the Kindle Fire HD has "30% more pixels" than the iPad Mini and its "standard definition, low-resolution" display. The pixel count, Amazon helpfully makes explicit, is 216 per inch for the Kindle Fire HD, 163 per inch for the iPad Mini.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px;">To bring things off the spec sheet and more into your living room, Amazon comes right out to say that its tablet lets you "watch HD movies and TV." The iPad Mini? Not so much, Amazon declares. The Kindle Fire HD also has the advantage in speakers and Wi-Fi, according to its maker.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px;">For a more complete comparison, and one with less of a vested interest, I would point you to a very thorough rundown done by my colleague Jessica Dolcourt, which also throws Google's Nexus 7 in for good measure: "iPad Mini vs.Google Nexus 7 vs. Amazon Kindle Fire HD."</span></span></div>

<div style="background-color: white;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px;">Just the other day, Amazon, while reporting its rather troubled third-quarter earnings, declared the Kindle Fire HD to be its best-selling product. Meanwhile, the urge to buy the iPad Mini seems to be a strong one, as shipments for some models slipped to 2 weeks within minutes of the Apple device going on sale.</span></span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The US Copyright Office reviews the Digital Millennium Copyright Act every three years, looking at requests to create temporary changes that act as ersatz loopholes int he law, typically to address continually changing technology standards. This year, the Copyright Office allows jailbreaking of devices like the iPhone, but not for devices like the iPad.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Office also ruled that consumers can unlock phones purchased before January 2013, but not thereafter. You’ll also be albe to bypass encryption on a DVD to use an excerpt in a non-commercial way, like in a documentary, but it will still be illegal to rip a DVD for your iPad. The rules seem pretty arbitrary, right?</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Why can’t we jailbreak iPads? The Librarian of Congress, who can grant these exceptions, “found significant merit to the opposition’s concerns that this aspect of the proposed class was broad and ill-defined, as a wide range of devices might be considered ‘tablets,’ notwithstanding the significant distinctions among them in terms of the way they operate, their intended purposes, and the nature of the applications they can accommodate. For example, an e-book reading device might be considered a ‘tablet,’ as might a handheld video game device or a laptop computer.”</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In other words, the people and companies that hold the rights to the content we all want to be able to legally move from our DVDs to our iPads convinced the Librarian of Congress that the word “tablet” was too ill-defined to allow such an exception, as people might start jailbreaking portable gaming consoles, e-readers, and laptops. So, basically, until the Librarian can find enough evidence to define “tablet” computers as things like an iPad, we’re stuck with the older rules. Good thing they go up for re-evaluation in three years.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilLLejBqsqUJEmiZZV1hZdr4lyzzub6Och2yLK9Dt_f3O1cncedP-JjwLJWyOxlmpfnTGSYjwQW6Is3PLON6ylsv-oqlLoNYdwpPYA5kwtF2ayVitdjhkZrbGAqPNp7m4a6pH4NlGdJZo/s1600/Reveal3.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilLLejBqsqUJEmiZZV1hZdr4lyzzub6Och2yLK9Dt_f3O1cncedP-JjwLJWyOxlmpfnTGSYjwQW6Is3PLON6ylsv-oqlLoNYdwpPYA5kwtF2ayVitdjhkZrbGAqPNp7m4a6pH4NlGdJZo/s320/Reveal3.png" width="162" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilLLejBqsqUJEmiZZV1hZdr4lyzzub6Och2yLK9Dt_f3O1cncedP-JjwLJWyOxlmpfnTGSYjwQW6Is3PLON6ylsv-oqlLoNYdwpPYA5kwtF2ayVitdjhkZrbGAqPNp7m4a6pH4NlGdJZo/s1600/Reveal3.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
Don’t feel too bad, however, as the Office also disallowed modification of game consoles, but allowed the cracking of DRM-protected e-books for consumers with a disability, regardless of the availability of that e-book in a non-DRM format, as the law stated previously.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One step up and two steps back? Perhaps, but it’s good to see that the laws regarding our current technology “rights” are being looked at, and updated, fairly regularly.</div>

<div style="font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<a href="http://ipadminitweaks.blogspot.com/2012/10/windows-8-its-it-your-choice.html" target="_blank">Windows 8</a> is an odd, discombobulated beast of an operating system that suffers from an identity crisis of the most severe degree. On the one hand, the primary focus of <a href="http://ipadminitweaks.blogspot.com/2012/10/windows-8-its-it-your-choice.html" target="_blank">Windows 8</a> is to bring touchscreen tablets into the Windows fold, but at the same time it cannot eschew the billions of mouse-and-keyboard users who use Windows on a daily basis, and the millions of developers and specialists whose livelihoods revolve around the Windows Desktop ecosystem.</div>
<div style="font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
Whether you use <a href="http://ipadminitweaks.blogspot.com/2012/10/windows-8-its-it-your-choice.html" target="_blank">Windows 8</a> on a tablet or desktop, x86 or ARM, or something else entirely, this paradigmatic rift will always be there. With months of use you can push Windows 8′s interface conflicts and foibles to the back of your mind, but the rift is always there, an inescapable pestilence that lurks in your shadow and sticks a wetted finger in your ear when you least expect it.</div>
<div style="font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
The good news, though — if you’re a tablet user, anyway — is that the touch/mouse-and-keyboard schism is much more evident on desktops. In fact, if it wasn’t for a few niggling issues that should’ve been sorted out by now, I would even say that Windows 8 is a fantastic tablet operating system. To get the full story, read on — or, hit up our review of desktop Windows, if touch isn’t your thing.</div>
<h2 style="font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; line-height: 22px;">
Initial impressions</h2>
<div style="font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
For this review I am using<a href="http://ipadminitweaks.blogspot.com/2012/10/windows-8-its-it-your-choice.html" target="_blank"> Windows 8 Pro (x86)</a> on a Samsung Series 7 tablet (pictured above). On the front there’s a 11.6-inch 1366×768 display, around the edges there are USB, micro-HDMI, and micro SD slots, and under the hood there’s an Intel Core i5-2467M CPU (dual-core Sandy Bridge, HD 3000 integrated graphics) clocked at 1.6GHz, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. In short, it’s one of the best tablets on the market. My only complaint, as you will see later, is that the screen is actually too big for Windows 8. You should also bear in mind that your Windows 8/RT experience, on wimpy ARM or Atom processors, might not be quite as <em>slick</em> as mine.</div>
<div style="font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
With that out of the way, my first impressions of <a href="http://ipadminitweaks.blogspot.com/2012/10/windows-8-its-it-your-choice.html" target="_blank">Windows 8</a> on a tablet are very good. The first-run experience is smooth — and when you’re finally dumped on the Metro Start screen, and the live tiles burst into life, you immediately want to start <em>touching things</em>. The Start screen is by far the most fluid and agile interface I have ever used. It seems weird to say this, but flicking my way around the Metro interface is almost <em>joyous</em>.</div>
<div style="font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<iframe frameborder="0" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-knqXkv5slk" width="640"></iframe></div>
<div style="font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
And then, as the adrenaline begin to run dry and the elation fades, you realize that you should probably stop pawing at your tablet and attempt to actually <em>do</em> something. This is where Windows 8 starts to run into trouble. </div>
<div style="font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: ProximaNovaRgRegular, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
</div>
<h3>
Gestures</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
There are four main gestures in <a href="http://ipadminitweaks.blogspot.com/2012/10/windows-8-its-it-your-choice.html" target="_blank">Windows 8</a>, and you’ll use them a lot on a Windows 8 tablet — but that’s okay, because touchscreen gestures are probably the operating system’s single most <em>polished </em>feature. Once you’ve used a Windows 8 tablet, iOS and Android will feel very clunky and slow in comparison.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Swiping in from the left switches to your last-used app, and you can keep swiping through a seemingly infinite number of apps. If you swipe in from the left and hold, you’re given the option of split-screening the app (more on that later). If you swipe in from the left, and then slowly move back towards the edge, you’re shown a task switcher (a lot like Alt-Tab).</div>
<div class="wp-caption alignnone" id="attachment_138877" style="width: 650px;">
<img alt="Windows 8 tablet, swiping in from the left to switch to the previous app" class="size-full wp-image-138877" height="266" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-swiping-in-from-the-left-gesture-640x426.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="Windows 8 tablet, swiping in from the left to switch to the previous app" width="400" /><br />
<div class="wp-caption-text" style="font-family: helvetica, arial; font-size: 11px; line-height: 15px; padding: 10px 0px;">
Windows 8 tablet, swiping in from the left to switch to the previous app</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Swiping in from the right reveals the Charms menu, which is the main way that you interact with the operating system.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Swiping in from the bottom is the gesture for “right click,” revealing an app’s context menu. Because this menu is populated by the app, and some third-party developers are lazy, this is generally the least-useful gesture — but it should improve over time.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Finally, swiping down from the top of the screen closes your current app. Due to the way Windows 8 handles multitasking (unless they require background activity, they’re suspended very quickly, removing almost all of the CPU and RAM footprint), there isn’t really a reason to close apps. With one exception: If you have lots of apps open, swiping back through them can be quite tiresome — in which case, you might want to close a few.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Rounding out the gestures, there is pinch-to-zoom, and what I’m going to call “Metro flick.” In <a href="http://ipadminitweaks.blogspot.com/2012/10/windows-8-its-it-your-choice.html" target="_blank">Windows 8</a>, there’s a UI guideline called Semantic Zoom, which the Start screen and many stock apps use — and hopefully developers will use in third-party apps as well. Basically, by pinching to zoom in/out, you can move up and down through the hierarchical layers of an app. You can zoom out on the Start screen to rearrange your live tiles, and then seamlessly zoom back in. You can zoom into a photo, and then zoom back out to your various photo libraries. Again, Semantic Zoom is one of those cool gestures that you’re really going to miss on iOS and Android.</div>
<div class="wp-caption alignnone" id="attachment_138878" style="width: 650px;">
<img alt="Windows 8 Metro Start screen, right a "Metro flicked" live tile" class="size-full wp-image-138878" height="224" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-metro-start-screen-flick-live-tile-gesture-640x359.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="Windows 8 Metro Start screen, right a "Metro flicked" live tile" width="400" /><br />
<div class="wp-caption-text" style="font-family: helvetica, arial; font-size: 11px; line-height: 15px; padding: 10px 0px;">
Windows 8 Metro Start screen, right a “Metro flicked” live tile</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Metro flick is a function reserved for the Start screen. Basically, to modify your icons/live tiles, you just… flick it. This is the equivalent of right clicking, and reveals a bunch of options at the bottom of the screen (resize, uninstall, run as administrator, etc.) To move icons/live tiles around, you just push and drag.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Overall, you will notice that Windows 8′s touchscreen gestures are very fluid. There is no push-and-hold that iOS and Android make such extensive use of. As a result, it feels like you’re always gliding through <a href="http://ipadminitweaks.blogspot.com/2012/10/windows-8-its-it-your-choice.html" target="_blank">Windows 8</a> at high speed — which is a very nice change, if you’ve ever tried multitasking or rearranging your home screen on iOS or Android.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<img alt="Windows 8 tablet, split-screen with a movie + Explorer" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-138865" height="224" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-video-split-screen-640x359.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="Windows 8 tablet, split-screen with a movie + Explorer" width="400" /></div>
<h3>
Split-screen</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Another defining split between Windows 8 and iOS/Android tablets is Windows’ ability to split-screen apps. Basically, by dragging in from the left slowly, you have the option of pinning an app to the left (or right) quarter of the screen. The other open app scales to fill the remaining three quarters.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
This is utterly fantastic if you like surfing the web while watching a TV show, or if you like to keep your playlist visible while you work on an essay.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
There are caveats, though: Apps can only be quarter-size, three-quarters size, or full size — there’s no sliding scale in between. This is because developers have to specifically program the quarter-size view (which is usually very different from the full-screen view). If you want to side-by-side edit two documents, you’re out of luck. You also can’t split-screen a Desktop app and a Metro app, which sucks.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
All in all, split-screen is one of Windows 8′s defining features, and one that puts it head and shoulders above iOS and Android when it comes to productivity and multitasking. It has some limitations, but for the most part its implementation is spot on, and very fun and easy to use.</div>
<h3>
On-screen keyboard</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
You should be glad that most of your interaction with Windows 8 will be gesture-based, because the on-screen keyboard and text input in general is <em>bad</em>. By default, you get a half-screen keyboard that looks and feels good, but it’s impossible to hit the keys in the middle without shifting your grip — and on a 16:9 tablet that weighs two pounds (900g), this gets old fast.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
The other option is a split keyboard, with the keys split evenly beneath both your thumbs. You can configure the buttons to be small, medium, or large — but even on the largest setting, I had trouble accurately hitting the right keys. There is also the problem that you can’t see both sides of the keyboard at once; you have to turn your head to see what buttons you’re pressing. Again, this gets very old very fast.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<img alt="The Windows 8 split, on-screen keyboard (OSK)" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-138936" height="115" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-split-onscreen-keyboard-640x184.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="The Windows 8 split, on-screen keyboard (OSK)" width="400" /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Most of these problems might be ameliorated by a smaller screen, but the buttons would still be too small for my fingers — and I suspect you’d still have to glance from side to side as you’re typing on the split keyboard.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
When it comes to actual text input, there is very little in the way of suggestions. Unlike iOS, Android, or Windows Phone 7, you don’t get word prompts as you type on the Windows 8 on-screen keyboard. It seems like some apps do provide prompts, but in those cases the prompts appear in the app itself, not as part of the keyboard — and reaching that far up the screen is neither fun nor quick.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Fortunately, eh, Microsoft’s Surface tablets are being bundled with physical keyboards — and as we’ll cover later, it’s very easy to connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard to a Windows 8 tablet. Still, data input on the move definitely seems like one of Windows 8′s weaker suits.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
</div>
<h2>
Doing stuff</h2>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
As far as actually using a Windows 8 tablet, as long as your use cases are entirely generic, you’ll be fine. As soon as you step outside the bounds of the lowest common denominator, though, you’re in for a shock.</div>
<h3>
Apps</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
At first glance, the Metro Start screen seems to offer a wealth of options. Right from the get-go, there are default apps for 90% of the things that you want to do on a tablet. News, Weather, Finance, Mail, Music, Video, Photos, Messaging, Maps, Internet Explorer, People — they all do exactly what you might think, and in general they perform admirably.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
More fool you if you try to do anything fancy with the default apps, though. Messaging is an attractive IM client, but it only lets you connect to Facebook and MSN — not Gtalk, or any other network. News is very pretty, but it’s impossible to share a story with anyone else due to the use of custom, non-standard protocols. Video is fantastic, if you want to pay Microsoft lots of money for a movie or TV show, but absolutely abominable if you want to play videos from your hard drive. Photos provides a lovely interface to the photos stored on your tablet, along with those in the cloud on Facebook, Flickr, and SkyDrive, but God help you if you want to do more than crop and rotate.</div>
<div class="wp-caption alignnone" id="attachment_138866" style="width: 650px;">
<img alt="Windows 8's Videos app. Note the complete lack of descriptive text." class="size-full wp-image-138866" height="224" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-tablet-video-player-thumbnails-640x359.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="Windows 8's Videos app. Note the complete lack of descriptive text." width="400" /><br />
<div class="wp-caption-text" style="font-family: helvetica, arial; font-size: 11px; line-height: 15px; padding: 10px 0px;">
Windows 8′s Videos app. Note how the thumbnails aren’t accompanied by any descriptive text at all. Oh, and it doesn’t play MKV files.</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Metro apps also lack almost any kind of customization. With Desktop apps you usually have a Preferences or Settings menu; Metro apps, in general, are one-size-fits-all. The aforementioned Video app bug could be easily rectified with some kind of “show file names” toggle; but alas, no such setting exists. Ultimately I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft is pushing hard to de-emphasize customization in Metro; tablet apps are meant to<em>just work</em>, after all — which is fine, except for when they don’t.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
But fair enough, I tell myself — they’re <em>default </em>apps, after all. It’s not like they’re meant to be the best apps in the world; they’re mostly just placeholders, until you find a third-party app to replace them. Which leads us neatly onto one of Windows 8′s greatest shortfalls.</div>
<h3>
Windows Store</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
I decided to visit the Windows Store, to see if there were third-party apps that could ameliorate the shortcomings of Windows 8′s stock Metro apps. In short: At the time of publishing, there are roughly 4,500 apps in the Windows Store. Many of these are just websites wrapped in the Metro interface, and many more are just web links to Desktop apps (which aren’t distributed through the Windows Store).</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
For instant messaging, your only third-party choice — for now — is IM+. There is no Gmail, no Facebook, no Instagram, and not a single Metro video playback app that supports MKV. For that pleasure, you have to install a desktop app like VLC — but alas, VLC isn’t in the Windows Store either.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<img alt="The Windows 8 Windows Store. A serious lack of Facebook." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-138869" height="224" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-store-no-facebook-app-640x359.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="The Windows 8 Windows Store. A serious lack of Facebook." width="400" /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Now, on x86 machines, the Windows Store ghost town isn’t the end of the world — we still have access to millions of Desktop apps — but for ARM users (Surface, Windows RT), the Windows Store is <em>it</em>; if it isn’t in the Store, you can’t use it. For those of us who have been using Windows 8 for the last year, there has always been this silent assumption that Microsoft would deliver, come hell or high water, a Windows Store that’s full to overflowing with awesome apps — but alas, launch day is here, and we’re still missing a whole slew of big-name apps.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
With that said, there are some very accomplished Metro apps available from the Windows Store — Skype, Evernote, and MetroTwit to name a few — but there simply aren’t enough of them. Updating your installed apps is a svelt, one-click process, too.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<img alt="Windows 8 Metro Start screen Charms" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-138870" height="224" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-charms-640x359.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="Windows 8 Metro Start screen Charms" width="400" /></div>
<h3>
Charms</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Beyond the Metro Start screen, Windows 8 introduces one other major interface element: Charms. On a tablet, the Charms bar can be accessed by swiping in from the right edge of the screen (again another case of gestures being one one of Windows 8′s best attributes; with a mouse and keyboard the gesture is much more clunky). From the Charms bar you can access Search, Share, Start, Devices, and Settings.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Start simply dumps you back at the Start screen, and Settings provides you with easy access to WiFi, volume, screen, keyboard, and other settings. It is also where you turn off or reboot your tablet (though you won’t be doing that very often). Devices we will discuss later.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<img alt="Windows 8 Search Charm, searching some email" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-138861" height="224" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-email-search-orionid-640x359.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="Windows 8 Search Charm, searching some email" width="400" /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Search, which replaces the Start menu’s just-start-typing feature, is by far the most powerful charm. From anywhere in the operating system, you can search for an app (and launch it), search for documents, or directly search inside another app. For example, you can be watching a movie, and then use the Search charm to immediately search the Wikipedia app. From here, you can then pin the movie using split-screen mode, and watch the movie and read Wikipedia at the same time.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Like most things with Windows 8, though, there are caveats. There is no way to search everything all at once, like with the Windows 7 Start menu; instead, you have to click through Apps, Settings, and Files (pictured below). It always defaults to Apps, too, which is very frustrating if you’re trying to access a control panel. The Files tab only seems to return files from your Libraries — and there doesn’t seem to be a way to expand the locations it indexes.</div>
<div class="wp-caption alignnone" id="attachment_138937" style="width: 650px;">
<img alt="Windows 8 Metro Start screen search" class="size-full wp-image-138937" height="224" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-search-apps-files-settings-640x359.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="Windows 8 Metro Start screen search" width="400" /><br />
<div class="wp-caption-text" style="font-family: helvetica, arial; font-size: 11px; line-height: 15px; padding: 10px 0px;">
Search is one of Windows 8′s strongest features — but it’s very irritating having to click “Settings” or “Files,” especially if you’re coming from Windows 7.</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Share, in theory, allows you to share whatever you’re looking at with your contacts, via email, Twitter, and eventually Facebook (when Facebook finally publishes its Metro app). You can also use Share to submit links to other services, such as StumbleUpon. In practice, apps have to be specifically tailored to use the Share charm, and in many cases developers just haven’t bothered. The story isn’t much better with Windows 8′s stock Metro apps, either: You cannot share a News story with a friend. The Music and Video apps let you share, but only with other Windows 8 users.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
On the flip side, the Photos app lets you share your camera, Facebook, or Flickr photos with anyone, via email — it’s fully backwards compatible. It makes you wonder why the other stock apps don’t degrade gracefully, though.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
The Charms are a key part of using Windows 8 on a tablet. For the most part they excel at providing quick access to common functions, but also to deeper, more involved functionality that you would expect on a PC, but not on a tablet.</div>
<h3>
Devices</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
According to Microsoft, one of the biggest strengths of Windows 8 is its full support for the PC hardware ecosystem. Whether you have Windows 8 on a tablet, desktop, laptop, or convertible, you can plug a mouse into the USB socket and it’ll work flawlessly.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
It’s a little unbelievable, but in practice this actually pans out. It would seem that, after 20 years or so, Microsoft has finally cracked the plug-and-play experience. Adding a Bluetooth keyboard is as simple as going to the Metro control panel and clicking “Add a device.” Ditto printers and scanners and whatever other peripherals you have laying around. Plug in a digital camera, and Windows recognizes it and gives you the option of immediately importing your photos into the Metro Photos app. Uninstalling devices is as simple as clicking a little minus symbol.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<img alt="Windows 8 Metro Devices pane" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-138868" height="224" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-tablet-devices-640x359.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="Windows 8 Metro Devices pane" width="400" /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Once you have some devices installed, the Devices charm works a lot like the Share charm. You can use the Devices charm to send documents to your printer, or send a video to an attached display or TV.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Overall, the experience of installing and manipulating devices on a Windows 8 tablet is really rather pleasant. I wonder if Windows RT has the same level of support for printers, cameras, etc; I suspect not.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
</div>
<h2>
Desktop</h2>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Unlike Windows RT, where the Desktop basically only exists as a playground for Office, Windows 8 tablets feature the full Windows 7 Desktop. With the exception of the Start menu (which is replaced by the Start screen), the Windows 8 Desktop is virtually unchanged from Windows 7. There are a few tweaks to basic Desktop apps like Task Manager, some cosmetic changes, and the introduction of the Ribbon UI to Explorer, but that’s about it.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
As you have probably guessed by now, due to the sparseness of the Windows Store, you will be spending quite a lot of time in the Desktop on your Windows 8 tablet. If you want to edit photos, you will need to use the Desktop. If you want to play MKV video files, you’ll need to use the Desktop. If you want to do anything outside the limited functionality of Metro’s four and a half thousand apps, you will need to use the Desktop.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Unfortunately, using the Windows 8 Desktop with your finger is, to put it kindly, not good. Where the Metro interface has slick, fast-moving gestures, the Desktop touch interface is clunky and slow. To right click in Desktop, you push and hold — which is tiresome, and because most of the targets are designed for mice, you often end up pushing-and-holding the wrong thing, meaning you have to start the whole belabored process again. As you know, the Windows Desktop revolves around the Superbar (Aero Peek, jump lists), and yet none of these features are easily accessible with touch.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<img alt="Windows 8 on a laptop, with the on-screen keyboard overlapping Steam" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-138859" height="224" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-steam-on-screen-keyboard-640x359.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="Windows 8 on a laptop, with the on-screen keyboard overlapping Steam" width="400" /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
You are probably wondering about data input, too — well, again, the lackluster on-screen keyboard makes a comeback, but this time it’s even worse. As you can see in the screenshot above, to say that the OSK and Desktop apps don’t play well together is an understatement. While we’re on this topic, it seems the OSK doesn’t work at all in some apps; I installed <em>World of Goo</em> via Steam, but there was no way to pop the OSK up, and thus no way to enter my name — and thus no way to play <em>World of Goo</em> on a Windows 8 tablet. This problem will likely exist with many Desktop apps. (Incidentally, <em>World of Goo</em> also changed my tablet’s screen resolution, and the only way to get it back to normal was to restart.)</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<img alt="Windows 8 tablet -- using the Desktop... with a stylus" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-138852" height="265" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-desktop-with-a-stylus-640x424.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="Windows 8 tablet -- using the Desktop... with a stylus" width="400" /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Ultimately, using Desktop with your finger involves a lot of very fine, fiddly work, which is unpleasant and frustrating. In an ironic twist of fate, my tablet actually came with a stylus — and if there’s anything that styluses are good at, it’s hitting small, fiddly targets. I really don’t want to pull out a stylus every time I use the Desktop, though — and likewise, while it’s an option, I don’t want to plug in a mouse and keyboard either. It blows my mind that Microsoft didn’t include any touch gestures at all in Windows 8 Desktop, after doing such a fine job in Metro.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
</div>
<h2>
Conclusion</h2>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
By now, it is hopefully very clear that Windows 8 is a mixed bag. Metro itself is probably the slickest user interface/user experience (UI/UX) paradigm to grace the tech world, ever. The new Metro control panel, the Charms, the device management — all very well executed and a joy to use.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
The lack of decent Metro apps, though, is crippling. There’s no two ways around it. Yes, Windows 8 on a tablet has access to the Desktop — but it just isn’t feasible to use Desktop apps unless you have a rock-steady hand and you’re sitting down. Of course, you can always plug in a mouse and keyboard — or indeed any PC-compatible peripheral — but again you need to be sitting down. One of the coolest aspects of a Windows 8 tablet is that it can become a fully fledged laptop or desktop PC — but really, that’s missing the point, and Windows 8 with a mouse and keyboard has its own set of problems, anyway.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
As it stands, Windows 8 makes for a good tablet operating system if you’re happy with only performing a specific subsection of activities. If you step outside the reservation, Windows 8 is brutally unforgiving. Every new platform faces such teething issues, of course, but the simple fact remains: Windows 8, in tablet form, has very limited functionality.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
<img alt="Windows 8: Metro and Desktop, forever enemies" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-138938" height="220" src="http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/windows-8-metro-desktop-alongside-each-other.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="Windows 8: Metro and Desktop, forever enemies" width="400" /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
The upshot is that all of the pieces are there — they’re just rough around the edges, and don’t quite fit together. There are strokes of genius — gestures, charms — but alongside them are deal-breaking flaws, such as a lack of Metro apps and a touchphobic Desktop. The good news, though, is that Windows 8′s flaws can easily be fixed with software updates. I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft publishes significant fixes to its stock apps in the next few days.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
Fundamentally, I think that Microsoft rushed Windows 8 to market. The biggest flaw in Windows 8 — the lack of Metro apps — could have been completely mitigated if Microsoft had announced its intentions sooner. As it is, we did not find out about the Metro Start screen until June 2011, and developers weren’t given tools to develop Metro apps until October. If Microsoft had held back Windows 8 until 2013, really polished the operating system until it shone, and gave developers the time to develop excellent apps, I suspect this review would’ve been almost entirely positive.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 24px;">
But of course, Microsoft can’t wait. It’s hemorrhaging market share to Apple and Google, and the only way to stem that is to get into the mobile market — and fast. It’s a risk, palming off a half-baked operating system on consumers and enterprises — but I hope that it pays off, because Windows has the makings of a truly fantastic tablet OS.</div>

<br />
Windows 8 began selling on Friday, Oct. 26. Now that the latest version of Windows is on the market, is it time for you to upgrade?<br />
<br />
Have you decided if you will upgrade yet, or are you interested in a new Windows 8 PC or tablet? Microsoft has been preparing the marketplace with advertising and TV commercials. Now that it's here, the advertising is likely to increase heavily. Here are some important things you should be clear about before making a purchase.<br />
<br />
First and foremost, Windows 8 is a dramatic departure from previous versions of Windows. Some may view this as a good thing and some may not. The look and feel of your computer has become a very personal thing, and technology enthusiasts are likely to embrace the challenge of a completely redesigned operating environment. Those who do not like change may wind up loathing the new interface. Only time will tell. Because the user experience has changed so significantly, I'm beginning to develop an impression that Windows 8 will be far more of a consumer product than a business product, but as I just said, only time will tell.<br />
<br />
So why do I say this? Let's first look at the current landscape. Windows 7 has become a familiar desktop operating environment that both businesses and consumers have come to rely on.<br />
<br />
We all know how to navigate our Windows Desktop and the Start Menu to find our files and programs.<br />
<br />
Windows 8 introduces a new desktop environment called the Metro Interface, which is a tiled interface characterized by numerous square tiles across what has been the traditional Windows Desktop.<br />
<br />
The Desktop still exists, but it is accessed from a tile and once there, the Start Menu is no more — the tiled interface is your new start menu, if you will.<br />
<br />
This fundamental change is likely to cause some anxiety among those who are quite comfortable with the traditional Windows Desktop.<br />
<br />
The other significant change is that there are now two very different versions of Windows 8. Windows 8 RT is a somewhat limited version of Windows 8 that will run on Microsoft's new Surface tablets.<br />
<br />
You are likely seeing a lot of advertising for these new Surface tablets this weekend, as this will be the first major Windows 8 hardware and software device to hit the market.<br />
<br />
While the Surface tablets run Windows 8, it's very important that you understand they are running Windows 8 RT, which is not the same as Windows 8. Windows 8 RT will not run traditional Windows applications.<br />
<br />
You will not be able to install Microsoft Office or QuickBooks on Windows 8 RT, as an example. All apps for Windows 8 RT will have to be purchased from the new Windows Store, no differently than how iPad applications have to be purchased from the iTunes store.<br />
<br />
However, just because an app is in the Windows Store, does not necessarily mean it will run on a Windows 8 RT Surface tablet.<br />
<br />
You will have to make absolutely certain that the app will run on Windows 8 RT. There will be a version of Microsoft Office for Windows 8 RT, however, it will not be ready for a few more months.<br />
<br />
Surface tablets will initially come with preview versions of the software.<br />
<br />
There will be a Windows 8 version of the Surface, called the Surface Pro Tablet, which will run Windows 8 and any Windows application, so if you intend to get a Surface tablet to run Microsoft Office and QuickBooks, you will have to wait until January when the Surface Pro is set to release.<br />
<br />
The Surface tablets available with Windows 8 RT today will not do what you want.<br />
<br />
This is where things are not as clear as I would have liked to see, especially for business customers.<br />
<br />
Windows 8 presents such a dramatic change that I don't see many businesses wanting to adopt the new operating system until sufficient time passes to allow the manufacturers of critical business systems software to test their applications on the new operating system and resolve any issues that may exist.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, when it comes to things like printers and other peripherals, all the devices that work with Windows 7 are supposed to seamlessly work with Windows 8, as the drivers are all compatible.<br />
<br />
This has been a major hassle in prior introductions of new operating systems, as the software drivers that control the interaction with the hardware had to be completely re-written and there were lots of compatibility issues.<br />
<br />
We should not have to confront that issue this time, however, on the pure software side, the new Metro user interface will require software companies to redevelop their software to support this new operating environment.<br />
<br />
Windows 8 is likely to be a success, but the adoption in the business world will almost certainly trail that of the consumer space. The focus on touch technology, at this point, is not as widely used in the workplace as it is at home. If you're thinking about new computers that may come with Windows 8, a new Surface tablet or an upgrade to your existing computer, be sure you do your research or consult with an expert to help you make informed decisions that you will be pleased with.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12424959973706377812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1784215296620337693.post-45568586643598351032012-10-27T15:51:00.000-07:002012-10-27T23:31:17.242-07:00Looking To Buy A New iPad Mini For The Holidays?<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Apple has been selling the new iPad and iPad Mini faster than they can say the word iPad. Apple has already <a href="http://ipadminitweaks.blogspot.com/2012/10/apple-already-sold-out-of-white-ipad.html" target="_blank">sold out of the white ipad mini</a> during the pre-order period, and now the company is readying a 4G LTE version of the tablet for release on Nov. 21, according to tech blog 9to5Mac.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img alt="Apples iPad Mini" border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhopwZuPHIfxjL_N0p7CFbndhSi4PekCqnk8PrYxAHxLYDQoNaca17X54LRQ_5JlG75LZBxpjBwZL6_reySD0ozqqZdtaxH5kBxYh0rGSkwZ7kHnGCCT8Gh5rAQ2xzimh8dZSemN_dquxw/s320/new-iPad-06-580-75.jpg" title="ipad mini vs nexus" width="320" /></div>
A report in the Apple-centric blog indicates Apple may start shipping iPad Mini tablets with 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless connectivity sooner than expected, arriving to customers on Nov. 21 with expedited shipping. The LTE-ready version starts at $459, while the WiFi-only iPad Mini starts at $329.<br />
<br />
While Apple itself hasn't commented, it's possible the early sell-out of the devices was due to issues with the iPad mini's display panel. An NPD DisplaySearch report by Senior Analyst Richard Shim, said that although Apple is expanding its partner base for the iPad Mini, issues with the display panel would limit initial shipments.<br />
<br />
Either way, the iPad mini is already off to an impressive start, and if analysts' predictions for the device are correct, this is the start of even bigger sales figures to come. According to research firm IHS, the iPad Mini could help the 7-inch tablet market double in size in 2012 and 2013. IHS noted that the report's projections were conservative figures that could be affected not only by demand for a smaller Apple tablet, but how well Apple would be able to meet demand.<br />
<br />
Tech site Eweek also notes that, "Expected high demand for the Apple tablets in Asia could also drive sales to extraordinary levels."<br />
<br />
The debut of Apple's iPad mini has left Amazon and Microsoft both scrambling to make cases for its tablets, in many cases by disparaging Apple's new tablet.<br />
<br />
<b>According to The Unofficial Apple Weblog, Amazon reportedly e-mailed a select group of customers a survey about the iPad Mini, shortly after its announcement this week.</b><br />
<br />
The highly technical questionnaire, which is similar to surveys the company has sent on other topics in the past, asks customers to rate how Amazon's $199 7-inch Kindle Fire HD stacks up next to 7.9-inch tablet Apple unveiled Oct. 23.<br />
<br />
"The new iPad Mini screen has a resolution of 1,024 by 768, corresponding to 163 pixels per inch," the questionnaire says. "If another device offered a detail of 216 pixels per inch, how would you rate it compared to the iPad Mini?" The comparison is a reference to the Kindle Fire HD - which offers just that resolution - according to The Unofficial Apple Weblog, which published Amazon's questionnaire.<br />
<br />
"It looks like Amazon is trying to figure out if customers want an iPad," says Rishi Shah, a marketing consultant and blogger.<br />
<br />
The questionnaire tries to gauge how the Kindle matches up against the new competition, he says, and even offers a $5 Amazon gift card as a reward for returning it.<br />
<br />
There's nothing "clandestine" about such market research, says consumer advocate Edgar Dworksy. "Maybe they want to get a sense of new features that would be of the most interest," he says.<br />
<br />
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos also spent a good amount of time on a quarterly earnings call Oct. 25 comparing the Kindle's specs to those of the iPad mini, which suggests Amazon is very anxious about Apple's new smaller tablet and wracking its brain to come up with a solution, says Peter Hildick-Smith, president of market researcher Codex Group. "Amazon is clearly concerned about its growing, direct competition with the world's most highly valued company," he says.<br />
<br />
Amazon's consternation with Apple's iPad mini could be a sign Amazon knows its fighting a losing battle in terms of the higher-end tablet market, studies suggest.<br />
<br />
The iPad Mini has many advantages over other 7-inch $199 tablets, according to a report this week by JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowtiz. The larger screen size, faster iO6 software and "look-and-feel" give it an edge over cheaper rivals, the report says. Since the price gap is also closing between the Kindle and the iPad, "Amazon is gearing up for a features war," says tech expert and blogger Jakob Nielsen.<br />
<br />
Microsoft has been more brazen and direct in taking shots at Apple's iPad Mini. President of Windows and Windows Live, Steven Sinofsky said that Microsoft and its PC-making partners have found a way to deliver modern computing at a price far less than Apple.<br />
<br />
He noted that there are full-featured Windows 8 laptops that sell for $279. "These are fantastic machines," Sinofsky said at the Oct. 25 launch of Windows 8 and the Surface tablet. At the iPad mini's price you can get a computer good enough to last a student through college, he said.<br />
<br />
"It's $279," he said referring to some Windows 8 laptops. "Here we are, talking about seven-inch recreational tablets for $329."<br />
<br />
Sinofsky said he is very pleased with the range of computers produced by the likes of Acer, Lenovo and Dell. He emphasized that there are numerous thin, light, touch-screen Ultrabooks that sell for hundreds less than Apple's $999 MacBook Air.<br />
<br />
"It's not just discounting," Sinofsky said. "It's engineering work that drives the cost down."<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">iPad Mini Specs</span><br />
<br />
You'll be able to get an iPad Mini Wi-Fi model in three memory configurations starting on November 2: $329 for 16GB, $429 for 32GB, and $529 for 64GB. Two weeks later on November 16, we'll see Wi-Fi + 4G models hit the shelves at $459 for 16GB, $559 for 32GB, and $659 for 64GB.<br />
<br />
The 1,024x768-pixel resolution matches that of the iPad 2, but on a 7.9-inch display. "This definitely isn't Retina Display, but it's better-than-iPad-2 display. Videos look excellent, and the IPS screen has great wide-viewing angles," said CNET.<br />
<br />
Includes a front-facing 720p-capable FaceTime camera, and a 5-megapixel back camera, and also supports 4G LTE, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi at 5.2Ghz, Bluetooth 4.0, and will use Apple's Lightning connector, first seen on the iPhone 5.<br />
<br />
<b>Apple claims that the Mini has a 10-hour battery life.</b><br />

As noted in our forums, the initial stock of White iPad minis sold out quickly in the U.S. Within the first 17 minutes, ship dates for the white iPad mini slipped to 2 weeks from the original "Delivers 11/2". The black Wi-Fi iPad mini remains available for delivery by November 2nd.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, lucida grande, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Of course, its hard to tell how much of the stock out is related to high demand vs. low supply. We suspect stocks may have been low as others have noted that countries outside the U.S. listed "2 week" delivery times from the first moment the white iPad minis went on sale. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, lucida grande, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, lucida grande, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">As typical, Apple will also offer the iPad mini in retail stores on launch day. Apple keeps a sizable stock of devices to be available on the official launch day of products. The Wi-Fi iPad mini will be available in retail stores starting on November 2nd. Meanwhile, the cellular version is promised by mid-November.</span></div>

Time has come to finally pre-order your iPad Mini after the big anticipated release date. Apple has now launched the official pre-order on the mobile app, and in the online store. Customers can now pick any version of the 4th generation iPad or iPad mini for the first batch of orders. If you're looking to have the iPad mini in your hands by november 2nd, You'll have to get the Wi-Fi only versions. The Wi-Fi with cellular will be available a couple weeks later. Which was mentioned in apples speech on tuesday. Shoppers in the U.S will be able to get the LTE versions shipped by mid november. Other markets including canada shows estimated shipping in late November, as well as the 4th generation iPad. Apple hasn't yet listed why the Wi-Fi with cellular versions are being shipped out two weeks later. CEO Ted Cook talked about the challenges of the ipad Mini manufacturing process. That Could Be The Main Reasoning Behind The Delay. You have to live in one of the launch Countries to be able to pre-order today. Included Countries Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K. A few other regions, including Bulgaria, Hungary, Iceland, Liechtentein, Puerto Rico, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. also on sale November 2 at select retailers, but customers in those locales won't be able to pre-order. Thats much more of a launch pool than the 3rd gen ipads 12 kick off markets. </div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7_oW3MzF82_lv7uejKWNEEPj2LAL3ezv9FTWThWIJkXifJKmfhY_xaduE7znReNNbI7X3zckMaBju4YgNyaE1bpJuOTO4JbBqUc5p2_b7vwA6gEy6nAKu48BMGoWpT_LZ4OzffoaOy6w/s1600/Question+Mark.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Read More" border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7_oW3MzF82_lv7uejKWNEEPj2LAL3ezv9FTWThWIJkXifJKmfhY_xaduE7znReNNbI7X3zckMaBju4YgNyaE1bpJuOTO4JbBqUc5p2_b7vwA6gEy6nAKu48BMGoWpT_LZ4OzffoaOy6w/s320/Question+Mark.png" title="iPad Mini A Fail" width="298" /></a>So when Apple announced their latest products. A new, extremely thin iMac, a 13" Retina Macbook Pro, and, perhaps the most interesting; the iPad Mini. You might be thinking the same thing I was. An iPad Mini? Isn't that just an iPod? Well, you might be right... </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In true Apple fashion, the details that were released were mostly marketing guff. It looks like it's literally just a smaller iPad.
The new iPad Mini is intended to compete with the wide range of ultra-cheap android tablets. The iPad is a fairly high end device in relation to the rest of the tablet market, but you are getting what you pay for. The iPad is, without discrepancy, the best option in the tablet market. Although android is developing, it still cannot compete with the simplicity and power of iOS.
The problem with making something cheaper is, you often have to sacrifice the amount of hardware in a device, or the quality of the hardware. This is something which Apple has been meticulous about in the past: quality. So, we can assume that if the iPad Mini really is as cheap or cheaper than some of it's competitors in the Android market, it will either be lacking performance, or quality. A bad quality Apple product...?
So, a smaller, cheaper iPad; an ultra thin iMac, and a 13'' Retina Macbook. Nothing much on the innovation side of things. We could be seeing the beginning of the end for the (current) largest company in the world. The only thing it seems like they're doing is making things smaller and lighter.
Things can only get so small and so light. Only Time Will Tell !</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The iPad mini’s gross margin is a little lower than the rest of Apple’s products at $329,CFO Peter Oppenheimer From Apple said on the company’s conference call today. He said that’s driving lower guidance for the upcoming quarter despite of Multiple new products Recently launched across its lineup.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We’re unwilling to cut corners in delivering the best experiences in the world,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. He stressed that the company is all about setting the bar high, perhaps implying that that’s what’s making gross margins slimmer on the iPad mini.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Oppenheimer added that the company hopes to improve margins with further supply chain and manufacturing process optimization as its production of the iPad mini continues to ramp up and become more efficient and cost-effective.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Launching the iPad mini required being “aggressive” on pricing according to Apple on the call, which is why the company chose to go below its ordinary margins. In past articles, I estimated that the bill-of-materials and construction costs might put the iPad mini within Apple’s existing range in terms of gross margins on hardware products, but it seems like the company’s unique design is keeping the iPad mini costs above the range I’d suggested.</div>

EE confirms launch of new iPads in the coming weeks As if a double-speed new iPad wasn't enough of a slap for recent purchasers of the erstwhile 'new iPad', it's now confirmed that fourth-gen iPads will now be available on the super-fast 4G airwaves in a matter of weeks. EE has announced it will carry both this new iPad and the iPad Mini, with 'a range of attractive data plans' to boot. Social media is currently awash with consumer outrage at EE's 4G tariffs that start at £21/month (SIM-only) for 500MB, while Apple has already had to defend its £269 price tag for the 16GB Wi-Fi only iPad Mini - not exactly pocket change compared to the £159 five-star Nexus 7 by Asus.</div>
<br />
EE's Orange and T-Mobile networks will also carry the two new iPads on HSPA+ networks.<br />
<br />
EE's 4G service will be available from 30 October, while the shelf date of the iPad Mini and fourth-gen iPad is yet to be announced.<br />

With its gorgeous 7.9-inch display, iPad mini features the same number of pixels as the original iPad and iPad 2, so you can run more than 275,000 apps designed specifically for iPad,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPad mini is as thin as a pencil and as light as a pad of paper, yet packs a fast A5 chip, FaceTime HD and 5 megapixel iSight cameras and ultrafast wireless―all while delivering up to 10 hours of battery life.”</span>
